Völkerrecht in Kiel

Kiel's Christiana Albertina was only the second university in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation to establish a chair for jus naturae et gentium in 1665, in 1914, the first university institute for international law in Europe took up its work in Kiel. Thus, the record of scholarship, academic teaching and, occasionally, practice of international law in Kiel is more than a mere report from a German provincial town: rather, it mirrors the history of the international legal discipline in Germany at large. The present volume traces that history in different perspectives, focussing in turn on institutional aspects, biographical elements, recurring topics, and important events, it also contains a documentary section. A special emphasis is laid on the 20th century with all its historical ruptures and continuities.
