P. 35) dieses Dunkel langst durch Gautier gelichtet sein soll. Er weifs, dafs sie nicht in Frankreich, sondern in St. Gallen entstanden sind, weifs auch, dafs sie jünger sind als die Sequenzen. Gautier, der Ge währsmann Meyers, erlaubt sich nur ein "probablement für diese Thesen, während Fr e re nach sehr sorgfältigen Studien, die auf ein gröfseres (wenngleich noch unzulängliches) als das von Gautier gebotene Material sich stützen, eher in Frankreich die Heimat der Tropen vermutet: This writers (notker, Tutilo and Ratpert), great as they were, did not originate the tropes, for the idea was definitely borrowed from a Frenchman nor did they bring them to perfection: and though the wide-spreading in¿uence of St. Gall no doubt did much to popularise them, the internal evidence of the Mss.
