THE IMPACT OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN ZIMBABWE

This book explored the impact of the English languageon the native languages and lives of the nativeZimbabwean people. Data were collected throughliterature searches, observations of language use byZimbabweans and interviews. Analysis of data followed the historical and phenomenologicalparadigms. Results showed that English indeedimpacted the native languages of Zimbabwe in schoolinstruction, social and economic aspects, prestige, power, the job market, communication, the media, political administration, and culture. While thestatus native languages in Zimbabwe wasdeteriorating that of English was growing threateningthe native languages and cultures. Generalrecommendations from the study are, 1. Raisinggreater awareness among Zimbabwean people to the needand importance of their native languages. 2. Makinglanguage policies that are inclusive of all languagesof the country. 3. Having native languages play acomplementary role in the education of children. 4.Encouraging schools and other agencies to provideprograms and services that enhance the country'snative languages and native cultures.
