»Judicial Ethics - In the Tension between Judicial Independence and the Rule of Law« The paper tries to provide to make a review of the discussion on »judicial ethics«. Firstly, it clarifies terms and introduces into the methods of applied ethics. In order to elucidate the characteristics of the German discussion, international discourse and ethical codes are consulted as a comparative approach. The behavioural requirements for judges are classified historically and legally. On that basis, a judicial virtue ethics is proposed which determines legal-ethical attitudes for various fields of judicial activity.
