Online Education for Pre-Service Teachers

The adoption of online or web-based courses for use during the pre-service preparation of teachers offers a useful tool with the potential for improving the quality of professional teaching. This work seeks to identify factors that influence the acceptance and use of web-based courses by faculty in teacher preparation programs within a major university system. The study examines the technical and non-technical aspects of online teaching that can influence the decision by faculty members to engage in distance learning. Objections to the perceived problems with hardware and software, job security, intellectual property rights, and the specific skills required to operate in an online environment are analyzed. The book will be of interest to university faculty planning to engage in distance learning, to faculty working with pre-service teachers, and to researchers.
