Ich bin Indianer

An "Indian" knows no pain and is true to his word. The "red man" is spiritual, proud, fearless-and never laughs. Stereotypes about Native Americans have established themselves in the collective memory of Central European society since the nineteenth century. These myths-reinforced especially by Karl May novels, Buff alo Bill Wild West shows, or Western fi lms-are, however, contrary to the history of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, as well as to the conditions today on reservations. For the project I Am Indian the photographer Kurt Prinz and the journalist Clemens Marschall visited a variety of hobbyists' "Indian cultures" in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. The "Indian" identities experienced there could hardly be more diverse, as they range from historically precise reenactments, to esoteric interpretations in the fi eld of self-help, to playful weekend activities for the whole family. Here is a view into an eccentric subculture. LEMENS MARSCHALL (*1985) lives in Vienna, where he is a freelance author and journalist. His articles have been published in Datum, Wiener Zeitung, Die Zeit, and elsewhere. Since 2007, he has been an editor and moderator for Radio Ö1, and he is also the publisher of the magazine Rokko's Adventures, as well as founder of its eponymous publishing company. KURT PRINZ (*1979) ) is a freelance photographer in Vienna. He occasionally collaborates with colleagues from the Atzgerei studio, or with the art fi gure Stirn Prumzer. He has created large photo series for Die letzten Tage des Hanappi Stadions (2016) and Sezierte Architektur (2016).
