Gerhard Richter. Kunststiftung Buchkatalog

On May 28, 2020, Gerhard Richter established the nonprofit foundation to which he has thus far donated 60 paintings, 4 photos, the "Birkenau cycle" plus photo versions, as well as 60 overpainted photos. The purpose of the foundation is to permanently care for the artist's work, withdrawing the works from the art market in order to show them in permanent exhibitions and loan them out. The oldest picture is from 1965, the newest from 2019. He secured their permanent upkeep with a generous, financial donation. The ultimate clincher that lead him to forming the foundation was his decision to not sell the four-part Birkenau cycle with the related works.
