The twelfth-century vita of St Olav, the Norwegian King Olav Haraldsson, is an essential text for the earliest Norwegian literature and culture. The different versions of the hagiographic dossier are comprehensively interpreted and contextualised, and for the first time completely in a critical edition presented.

On the basis of all known manuscripts - Latin, Old Czech and German - presented here for the first time in a complete edition, the author traces the dissemination of this late antique apocrypha in the medieval west, its integration into new changing, contexts of transmission and combinations of texts as well as its vernacular translation.
